11.03.21 I attended the first edition of Femme Innovate at Design Hub Kampala, the theme was “Building the Queen’s Enterprise”… Now up until this day, I had decided a few weeks before that am not an entrepreneur. In my mind when you identify as an entrepreneur you are Bill Gates, Dangote or Bitature. I had been reading purpose-driven life and was trying to figure out what my Big picture was all about. So I start making a list of the things am passionate about, Writing, storytelling, dancing, reading and a couple of very many “informal things” and I got frustrated. So I tried the formula the other way round, I wrote down my weakness. “I don’t believe in myself and I don’t think am good at anything”
So one of the goals I set coming into 2021 was to be intentional about networking,(Build your network, Build your net worth) associating with people that carry what I want. Patricia Opio happened to be on one of the WhatsApp groups am on. From last year she would post links of her blog and I would read some, skip some. Then she wrote one about women rooting for each other, and that was my cue, I checked into her DM and that’s how I ended up at the Femme Innovate talk, she was the guest speaker.
Patricia Opio is a creative and multi-passionate designer and Storyteller,(check out her website https://thisismestory.com)she cited that the first step to building an enterprise is knowing who you are. “The enterprise/brand needs to be authentic and usually stems from the founder, so if the founder understands who they are- gifts, passion, abilities….basically has embraced their story and owned it, then building an authentic and purpose-driven brand is possible. It is what differentiates you from the crowd.”
When I thought Big picture, I think Administrator,Operations Manager(another thing(s) am passionate about). I say thought because my narrative changed. The conversation at the event centred around inspiring and empowering women in the creative world.
And that changed my perspective, also I learned that there is a thing called “lifestyle entrepreneurs!”🤭 Google it.
Distinct extraordinary ladies shared their stories, which by the way will be featured under the “Design Hustle” project on the Start Journal online magazine by Design hub Kampala. I was especially moved by the fact that I could build a career around my creative genius.
The highlight of the day for me was my conversation with Jean Macky one of the directors at design Hub. I asked a question towards the end of the session, “How does a creative make money?” and she opened my eyes to a whole load of possibilities, heck she pointed out some of my value points. You might just be looking at the next advocate for single mothers. ( a story for another day).
I am very excited for my journey with Design hub Kampala under Femme Innovate and The start journal magazine were I will be featured as a an Enterprise.
I believe sometimes we need help getting on the right path and it’s okay to not have it all figured out, I didn’t know I could find my enterprise and if I did, I never thought It would be something am passionate about.
So hit that DM, attend that networking event and most importantly ask that Question.
If you ask me, I think The big picture is overrated because destiny is today.
